Juventus Football Club have announced they will not be renewing their contract with the Italian international centre-half and are in talks with Italian champions AC Milan to bring him back.
In a statement released by Juventus Football, the club confirmed: “We have confirmed with AC Milan that Gianluigi Buffon will not renew his contract with Juventus.”
The 26-year-old Buffon, who has won six Serie A titles and three Champions League titles, joined the Italian champions in July 2015 from Italian side Udinese for a reported fee of €35 million.
But he struggled to hold down a regular place and Juventus struggled in the first half of the campaign.
Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals and the Bianconeri missed out on the Europa League.
However, Buffon scored six goals in 11 Serie A games as they were runners-up in the table.
The Bianconese also beat Juventus in the Supercoppa delle Nazionale final in December.
